Abstract

This article examines the growing interest in Spanish colonial relations with Equatorial Guinea through the lens of five contemporary Spanish documentary films produced in the early twenty-first century. These documentaries engage with themes of colonialism, racism, memory, and Afro-descendance by reinterpreting archival materials—particularly those from the 1940s Hermic Films productions—and challenging colonial stereotypes. The films vary in approach, from investigative reconstructions of colonial violence, as in *Anunciaron Tormenta* (A Storm Was Coming), to more personal and cultural narratives of postcolonial identity and migration, such as *Manolito Nguema* and *A todos nos gusta el plátano* (We All Like Plantain). Despite increased visibility at film festivals, these works remain niche and reflect ongoing complexities in addressing colonial legacies, including difficulties in filming in Equatorial Guinea and the persistence of Eurocentric perspectives. The article situates these documentaries within broader historical, political, and cultural contexts, highlighting their role in fostering critical awareness of colonial power dynamics and their contemporary repercussions.
