Abstract
The article focuses on the diplomatic rupture between Mauritius and the Maldives over the sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago. Mauritius severed ties after the Maldives refused to recognize its claim, which is based on decades of legal rulings, including a 2019 International Court of Justice advisory opinion and a 2025 agreement with the UK transferring control of the islands to Mauritius while allowing continued military use of Diego Garcia. The Maldives, under President Mohamed Muizzu’s "Maldives First" policy, challenges this settlement, asserting its own historical claims and complicating a dispute previously seen as bilateral between Mauritius and Britain. The situation involves broader geopolitical interests, unresolved grievances of displaced Chagossians, and concerns about the implications for international law and regional stability in the Indian Ocean.
