Abstract

The article focuses on recent legislative actions and funding priorities for public education in Kansas, particularly the establishment of a committee under House Substitute Bill for SB387 (2024) tasked with creating a new, equitable public school funding formula to be implemented in the 2027–2028 school year. This formula aims to address adequate funding, special education gaps, teacher shortages, and compliance with federal and state mandates for student achievement. Current funding for fiscal years 2024–2026 continues under the existing formula, with adjustments for infrastructure and mental health support, while the state also manages challenges related to reliance on local property taxes and educational inequities. Additionally, the article outlines higher education infrastructure investments and provides detailed data on Kansas’s per pupil expenditures, highlighting increases in instruction, transportation, and capital improvements.
