Abstract

This article examines archives management practices within Mpigi District Local Government (MDLG) in Uganda, highlighting their role in supporting local government service delivery. The study found that while MDLG maintains archives in both paper and digital formats, it lacks a formal archives management policy, adequate budgetary support, professional archivists, and proper storage facilities, resulting in disorganized and inaccessible records. Staff responsible for archives management possess limited practical skills, and the district faces challenges including insufficient infrastructure and funding, hindering effective appraisal, preservation, and digitization of archives. The authors recommend developing a comprehensive archives management policy, establishing a centralized archives storage facility, recruiting qualified archivists, training staff in archival practices, and allocating sufficient resources to improve archives management at MDLG.
