Abstract

The article discusses the shutdown of a key oil pipeline in Sudan and its potential impact on South Sudan. The loss of crucial oil revenue is a major concern for analysts, as it may lead to the delay of South Sudan's first-ever elections. The shutdown has grave implications for people's livelihoods and security, and South Sudan is at risk of an imminent economic crisis. Despite its oil riches, the country has struggled with ethnic violence, instability, poverty, and natural disasters since gaining independence in 2011. The government in Juba has not publicly commented on the force majeure declaration. The situation is expected to worsen in the coming months, with a potential collapse of the government and protests by citizens. The damaged pipeline is likely to delay the scheduled elections, as funds will be directed towards placating the political elite rather than election preparations. South Sudan is also facing challenges from episodes of drought, extreme rainfall, and rising temperatures due to climate change. [Extracted from the article]
