Abstract
The article discusses factors causing Latvia to lag behind in terms of socio-economic advancements compared to its neighboring Baltic states of Lithuania and Estonia. These include Latvia's economic strategy dating back to the 1990s, the choice of Riga as the centre for financial services, political culture that shows the intertwining of business interests with governance, imbalance between population density and regional development, lack of governing experience, and excess bureaucracy.
