Abstract
This article examines cultural barriers and facilitators to patient and community education in Lesotho from the perspective of Basotho clinicians employed by international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and academic institutions. Using social cognitive theory, the study identifies key challenges including patients’ deference to authority figures, influence of family and community power dynamics on healthcare access, and resistance from village leaders when excluded from planning processes. Findings highlight that despite shared cultural identity, clinicians trained in Western biomedicine face cultural obstacles when educating traditional rural communities, influenced by factors such as power distance, gender roles, and conflicting traditional and religious beliefs. The study recommends culturally targeted needs assessments, engagement of local leadership through health center committees, and formal training in cultural reflexivity for local clinicians to improve educational outreach and collaboration.
