Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of COVID-19 and climate change on food security in Oman using econometric methods applied to data from 1990 to 2022. Employing Johansen cointegration, canonical cointegrating regression (CCR), and fully modified least squares (FMOLS), the research finds a significant long-term relationship among carbon dioxide emissions (CO₂), real GDP per capita, inflation, a COVID-19 dummy variable, and food security (proxied by food imports). Results indicate that climate change, represented by CO₂ levels, has a significant negative effect on food security in Oman, while the effects of COVID-19, economic growth, and inflation are statistically insignificant. The study recommends that policymakers prioritize enhancing climate resilience in the food sector and invest in domestic food production to reduce import dependency, and it calls for further research incorporating additional variables and broader regional analyses to better understand food security determinants.
