Abstract

The Ger Innovation Hub is a community center designed by Rural Urban Framework in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. It was created to address the lack of access to water, sanitation, education, and pollution control in the growing ger districts surrounding the city. The hub's design combines traditional elements of gers with modern features, such as origami-like walls that can be folded and opened. It serves as a space for community engagement, collaboration, and innovation, offering classes and programs on horticulture, business development, and more. The structure is built using locally sourced, low-cost materials and is adaptable to extreme weather conditions. The community actively participates in the design, construction, and maintenance of the hub, and its programming continues to evolve based on the needs of the residents. The goal is to replicate this model in other ger areas and empower communities to self-organize. [Extracted from the article]
