Abstract

This article focuses on the taxonomic revision of Indo-Pacific species of the freshwater and brackish fish genus *Hypseleotris* (excluding Australian endemics) using integrated molecular (mitochondrial ND2 and COI genes) and morphological analyses. Seven species are recognized, including the description of a new species, *Hypseleotris ebneri* sp. nov., and the revalidation of four previously synonymized species: *H. alexis*, *H. everetti*, *H. guentheri*, and *H. moncktoni*. The study reveals that *H. cyprinoides*, previously considered widely distributed, is restricted to Indian Ocean islands and nearby regions, while Papua New Guinea hosts at least four distinct *Hypseleotris* species, highlighting the need for further sampling and conservation attention. Detailed morphological characters and an identification key are provided to distinguish these species, which differ notably in fin ray counts, scale counts, body proportions, and genetic divergence.
