Abstract

The article reviews *Communities of the Soul: A Short History of Religion in Puerto Rico*, which examines the significant religious transformation of Puerto Rico during the twentieth century from a predominantly Catholic society to a religiously pluralistic one. The book traces the rise of Protestantism following the U.S. invasion in 1898, highlighting how Protestant denominations, supported by U.S. missionaries, challenged Catholic dominance by fostering more egalitarian congregations and expanding local religious participation. It also explores the blending of Indigenous, European, African, and U.S. religious traditions that shaped Puerto Rican religiosity, including Catholicism, Protestantism, Spiritism, Santería, Judaism, and Islam. The work provides a chronological and well-documented overview of these developments, emphasizing how religious pluralism has redefined Puerto Rican identity.
