Abstract

The article provides an overview of Michigan's P–12 and higher education funding for fiscal year 2023–2024, highlighting recent changes to the state funding formula and key priorities. Senate Bill 173 directs increased appropriations toward economically disadvantaged students, special education students, and English-language learners, with weighted funding adjustments to support these groups. The state also expanded funding for early childhood education through the PreK for All initiative and increased per-pupil base funding, while addressing student nutrition by funding free meals and meal debt forgiveness. Challenges include declining student enrollment due to demographic shifts and rising charter school attendance, which may impact future funding and school operations. Additionally, higher education funding supports initiatives aimed at increasing postsecondary attainment and reducing racial equity gaps by 2030.
