Abstract
The article focuses on a public health intervention in Washington state that automated the linkage of publicly available correctional facility rosters with unresolved syphilis investigations to improve case finding and treatment. Between June 22, 2023, and January 22, 2024, data from 60 of 69 correctional facilities were collected and matched to syphilis cases using a deterministic algorithm, resulting in alerts sent to disease intervention specialists (DISs). This process identified 312 potential matches, with 54 individuals successfully tested or treated, many of whom had been unlocated for 60 days or more and might not have been found otherwise. The intervention improved efficiency without additional staffing, helped reach marginalized populations disproportionately affected by syphilis, and demonstrated potential as a sustainable tool for enhancing sexually transmitted infection (STI) control efforts.
