Abstract

The Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, discussed plans for transporting Turkmen gas to Turkey and the EU, as well as potential cooperation in hydrocarbon extraction in Turkmenistan, during negotiations in Ashgabat. The parties evaluated the steps needed to implement a memorandum of understanding signed in March 2024 for transporting Turkmen gas to Europe through Turkey. Turkey aims to receive 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Turkmenistan starting in 2025, and the transportation of such volumes would not require major investments. Turkey's total gas demand is about 50 billion cubic meters per year, and the country has positioned itself as a gas hub with LNG terminals and a network of gas pipelines.
