Self-Determination and Autonomous Digital Language Learning in Mexico: An Exploratory Case Study of Secondary EFL Students.

Abstract
This exploratory case study examines how five Mexican secondary students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) engage in autonomous digital language learning outside the classroom, guided by Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The study finds that students are primarily extrinsically motivated to improve linguistic competence and relatedness by accessing native English speakers and increasing language input through platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Discord, and online video games. These digital tools support learners' psychological needs and foster varying regulation styles and levels of self-determination, enabling greater learner autonomy and alignment with personal interests. The research highlights the potential benefits of integrating students' digital language learning experiences into formal education to enhance motivation and language proficiency, while noting limitations related to the small, socioeconomically homogenous sample and recommending further research in diverse contexts.
