Abstract

The article focuses on the political tensions and government changes in Guinea-Bissau under President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. Embalo reshuffled his cabinet in August 2023, appointing new ministers and secretaries of state at the suggestion of Prime Minister Rui Barros. Embalo accused former Prime Minister Nuno Nabiam and Speaker Domingos Pereira of orchestrating a 2022 attempted coup, while Pereira warned of an "institutional coup" aimed at extending Embalo’s term beyond its February 2025 expiration. The political climate has also affected press freedom, with reports of intimidation and violence against journalists, and the arrest and alleged torture of opposition activist Queba Sane, prompting calls for his release by the Movement for Democratic Alternative (Madem G15) and human rights groups.
