Abstract
This article focuses on research from Copenhagen, Denmark, examining how schizophrenia became a globally recognized, cross-cultural diagnosis in the latter half of the 20th century. The study explores the interplay between psychiatry, modernity, and concepts of "primitivism," highlighting schizophrenia's role in redefining international and cultural boundaries during decolonization. It also discusses how Western psychiatrists reassessed their colonial-era perspectives and how the schizophrenia and culture debate contributed to the development of transcultural psychiatry, despite ongoing challenges related to racial hierarchies and narrow interpretations of culture. The research was supported by Danmarks Grundforskningsfond and is peer-reviewed. [Extracted from the article]
