Abstract

This article focuses on the challenges and strategies for improving glycaemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It identifies key determinants of poor glycaemic control, including financial constraints, lack of affordable healthcare coverage, difficulties in lifestyle modification, low health literacy, and limited healthcare and social support. A Delphi study of experts recommended five strategies to address these issues: reforming the healthcare system to better manage diabetes and other noncommunicable diseases, ensuring consistent healthcare financing, increasing diabetes awareness, facilitating lifestyle changes, and reducing undiagnosed diabetes through targeted screening. The findings highlight the urgent need for increased government investment and systemic changes to improve diabetes care in the DRC and have broader implications for sub-Saharan Africa.
