Abstract

This case study examines the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies by the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) of Sri Lanka to enhance health promotion efforts, particularly through social media. AI-generated images used in health communication posts achieved 30%–40% higher reach and engagement compared to non-AI-generated content, supporting advocacy, mediation, and enabling strategies aligned with the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. Despite these benefits, the HPB faces challenges including inadequate data governance, limited analytical infrastructure, workforce skill gaps, and insufficient attention to equity and bias in AI deployment. The study underscores the need for formal data governance mechanisms, targeted workforce training, strategic partnerships, and ethical frameworks to ensure effective and equitable AI integration in public health promotion. Further research is recommended to rigorously evaluate AI's impact across diverse communication channels and populations.
