Abstract
This article analyzes Alaska's education funding for fiscal years 2025 and 2026, focusing on budget allocations, legislative actions, and challenges in education finance. Key developments include a permanent increase to the Base Student Allocation (BSA) for K–12 funding, which faced multiple vetoes by Governor Dunleavy and was ultimately restored by legislative overrides—the first such override since 1987. Despite overall funding increases, reductions occurred in teacher certification, career and technical education, and school debt reimbursement, complicating efforts to address teacher recruitment and retention amid nearly 400 unfilled positions. The article also highlights disparities in per pupil spending across regions due to geographic and cost-of-living differences, ongoing debates over correspondence school funding, and tensions between Alaska's executive and legislative branches affecting education policy.
