Abstract
This article introduces a special issue focused on the impact of Russia's 2014 and 2022 military actions on the language use and language ideologies of Ukrainians both within Ukraine and in diaspora communities. It highlights how the full-scale invasion in 2022 intensified the shift from Russian to Ukrainian language use as an expression of national identity and resistance, affecting public and private language domains differently and influencing youth, educators, social media, and refugee populations. The issue's articles explore diverse topics including wartime language pedagogy, language behavior among youth and vloggers, the role of humor and social media in language politics, and the linguistic experiences of Ukrainian refugees in Germany, emphasizing complex multilingual realities shaped by war, migration, and identity. Overall, the collection illustrates how language functions as a key site of sociopolitical contestation and solidarity amid ongoing conflict.
