Abstract

This article focuses on estimating the prevalence and correlates of psychological distress (PD) among adults aged 18–69 in three small Pacific Island countries: Nauru, Tokelau, and Tuvalu, using national cross-sectional data from the STEPS surveys. The study found that 30.4% of the pooled sample experienced PD, with the highest prevalence in Nauru (41.5%) and the lowest in Tokelau (5.0%). Factors positively associated with PD included younger age (18–39 years), female sex, alcohol-related family problems, history of heart attack or stroke, current smoking, high salt intake, and high sedentary behavior, while being male and residing in Tokelau or Tuvalu were negatively associated. The findings highlight the need for targeted mental health interventions addressing these correlates within these Pacific Island populations.
