Abstract

Mauritania's president, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, has begun his campaign for re-election in the upcoming June 29th elections. He is expected to win a second term as the leader of the country, which has a population of 4.5 million. During his first term, President Ghazouani implemented social welfare policies that benefited over 1.5 million people. However, the opposition has criticized the election process, calling it "one-sided" and accusing the election commission of not ensuring a fair election. The former president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, was not allowed to run due to his imprisonment for embezzlement. Mauritania has not experienced any jihadist attacks since 2011, unlike neighboring countries in the Sahel region. [Extracted from the article]
