Hourly activity patterns of the insectivorous bat assemblage in the urban–rural landscape of Lima, Peru.

Abstract

This article focuses on the hourly activity patterns of eight aerial insectivorous bat species in an urban–rural landscape of Lima, Peru, examining how abiotic and biotic factors, including urbanization and moonlight intensity, influence their circadian rhythms. Using passive acoustic monitoring, the study found high temporal overlap in bat activity, especially in rural areas, with most species exhibiting bimodal or unimodal activity patterns that varied between urban and rural settings. Moonlight intensity had minimal effect on activity periods for most species, though some variation was noted for Promops davisoni. The findings suggest that temporal partitioning is not the primary mechanism for coexistence among these bats, and that urban environmental conditions, such as artificial lighting, may shape species-specific foraging behaviors.
