Abstract

This article examines the differential effects of stress exposure and perceived stress on self-rated health among Ukrainians during the ongoing war, based on a quantitative online survey conducted in November 2022 with 213 participants. The study found that perceived stress—a subjective cognitive experience—was a stronger predictor of negative mental and physical health outcomes than objective stress exposure. Protective psychosocial factors such as optimism and social support were associated with lower perceived stress and better mental health, while forced migration, especially moving abroad, correlated with higher stress levels and earlier onset of adverse health symptoms. These findings highlight the complex interplay between cognitive appraisal of stress, psychosocial resources, and health in the context of armed conflict and displacement.
