Abstract
A study conducted by the University of Pretoria in Harare, Zimbabwe, explores the experiences of gender and sexuality diverse individuals in disclosing their sexual orientation to their families. The research highlights the challenges faced by individuals in 'coming out' due to social and cultural forces that strongly react against gender and sexuality diversity in Zimbabwe. The study involved interviews with 31 participants aged between 18-31 years, revealing various pathways through which families became aware of their sexual orientation, including planned disclosure and outing through extortion or blackmail. The participants shared narratives of both negative and positive responses, showcasing the complexity of family reactions towards their gender and sexuality diversity. [Extracted from the article]
