Abstract

This article focuses on the Belarusian metal band Dymna Lotva and their experiences fleeing political repression and war. Formed in 2015, the band draws on Belarusian history and culture in their music but faced government crackdowns after participating in the 2020 protests against authoritarian president Alexander Lukashenko. After escaping Belarus in 2021, they settled in Ukraine but were displaced again by the Russian invasion, eventually relocating to Poland where they continue to create music under international protection. Despite being banned and labeled as extremists by Belarusian authorities, Dymna Lotva remains committed to their art and cultural heritage, using their work to address themes of oppression, exile, and resilience.
