Abstract
The article focuses on the response of Equatorial Guinea to environmental protests on the island of Annobon, where authorities imposed an internet and cellular blackout following demonstrations against mining and infrastructure projects. Over 40 rights groups condemned the shutdown, citing restrictions on human rights. In July, 37 protesters demanding the island's independence were arrested and charged with offenses including slander and undermining the constitutional order; they remain in custody at Black Beach prison. Additionally, Joaquin Elo Ayeto, coordinator of the banned rights group Somos+ Sociedad Civil, was detained for allegedly seeking assistance from the French embassy. Government officials attributed the unrest to separatists based abroad with limited ties to Annobon.
