Abstract
This review focuses on *Rethinking Scholarly Communication in China* by Liu Zhongbo, which employs a political economy approach to analyze the development of China's scholarly communication system over recent decades. The book examines how political and economic factors have shaped academic publishing, research output, and institutional dynamics, highlighting China's rapid rise in global scholarly influence alongside challenges such as censorship and academic misconduct. Key topics include the evolution of science and technology policies, disparities among universities, the role of the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) as a central academic platform, and tensions between international engagement and national priorities. While the book offers a detailed and data-supported analysis, it is noted that discussions on humanities disciplines and predatory publishing in China could be more thoroughly integrated.
