Abstract
This study examines the lived experiences of Wisconsin K-12 art teachers who incorporate contemporary art into their teaching, using descriptive phenomenology and thematic analysis of surveys, interviews, and focus groups. Participants reported benefits such as increased student engagement, enhanced relevance through diverse and inclusive content, development of novel pedagogies, and greater visibility of art programs via artist residencies and lectures. Challenges included limited preparation time, insufficient pre-service training in contemporary art pedagogy, difficulty addressing controversial social issues, and a tendency to rely on product-based lessons rather than conceptual or inquiry-driven approaches. The study highlights the need for improved support and professional development to help K-12 art teachers effectively integrate contemporary art in ways that foster critical thinking and social awareness.
