Abstract
This article focuses on changes in e-cigarette use, cigarette smoking, and dual use among youth aged approximately 13–15 years across ten countries, based on data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS). The study found significant increases in awareness of e-cigarettes, ever use, current use, and dual use (concurrent use of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes) in most countries between baseline (2013–2014) and recent surveys (2017–2019), with Italy and Latvia showing the highest prevalence. While cigarette smoking declined significantly in some countries (Italy, Latvia, Peru, San Marino), it remained stable or increased in others. Multilevel regression analyses indicated that older age, male sex, cigarette smoking, higher country income, and more restrictive e-cigarette regulations were associated with greater odds of e-cigarette use and dual use. The findings underscore the need for continued surveillance and comprehensive tobacco control policies inclusive of e-cigarettes to address youth tobacco use globally.
