Health literacy and its determinants among school-going children: a school-based cross-sectional study in Nepal.

Abstract
This article focuses on assessing health literacy levels and their determinants among school-going children in Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Nepal. Using the 10-item Health Literacy for School-Aged Children (HLSAC) scale, the cross-sectional study of 354 students found that 9.6% had low health literacy, 76.6% moderate, and 13.8% high. Factors significantly associated with limited health literacy included living in joint or extended families, mothers with education up to secondary level, students’ pre-existing mental illness, and unsatisfactory self-rated health status. The study highlights the need for targeted health promotion programs, including integrating health literacy into school curricula, supporting children with mental health conditions through peer groups, and improving maternal education to enhance health literacy among Nepalese school children.
