Abstract
The article focuses on the bioecology of the millet head miner, *Heliocheilus albipunctella* De Joannis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a major pest of pearl millet (*Pennisetum glaucum*) in the Sahelian zone of Burkina Faso. Over two years of study, it was found that adult populations emerge during the rainy season with a female-biased sex ratio (4 females to 1 male) and high rates of gravid females; no adults were captured during the dry season. Females preferentially oviposit on 1/3 extension and fully expanded millet panicles, and larval survival on panicles is high but decreases as larval density increases, causing significant damage with over 40% of panicles destroyed in farmers' fields. Additionally, females do not lay eggs on panicles already bearing eggs from other females, suggesting potential implications for pest management strategies.
