Abstract

This article focuses on the prevalence, patterns, and associated factors of intimate partner violence (IPV) among adolescents aged 14 to 19 years living in urban slums of Kampala, Uganda. In a prospective cohort study of 490 participants, 27.8% reported recent IPV victimization within the past three months, with emotional IPV being the most common form. Factors independently associated with IPV included high-risk alcohol consumption, engagement in paid sex, and being separated from a marital partner. The study also observed a decline in IPV reports over the first nine months of follow-up, followed by an increase coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. These findings highlight the need for targeted IPV interventions among young people in urban slums that address alcohol use and the socio-economic vulnerabilities linked to IPV.
