Abstract
The article focuses on the exclusion of opposition candidates from Burundi’s upcoming local elections, as decided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI). Candidates from the Burundi for All coalition, which includes members of the suspended opposition party National Freedom Council (CNL), were barred from running due to electoral laws and a recent decree restricting independent candidacies. Notably, Agathon Rwasa, a former militia leader and presidential runner-up, was among those excluded and has legally challenged the decision. The article also notes ongoing concerns about Burundi’s human rights situation amid political repression.
