Abstract
This study investigates Salvadoran residents' critical perceptions of media portrayals of gender, the LGBTQ+ community, and gender-based violence (GBV), focusing on perceived accuracy, negativity, and stereotyping. Findings reveal that LGBTQ+ portrayals are viewed as more inaccurate and negative compared to those of men and women, while perceptions of stereotyping vary. Although Salvadorans demonstrate some critical engagement with media content, these perceptions inconsistently predict attitudes toward sexism, discrimination, and beliefs about GBV prevalence and severity. The research highlights the need for enhanced critical media literacy programs in El Salvador and calls for further studies to clarify how media perceptions influence social attitudes in contexts marked by high rates of GBV and limited legal protections.
