Abstract
This article focuses on the experiences of Justice Linda Murnane, who served as an Associate Justice on the High Court of the Marshall Islands from 2022 to 2024. It details her background as a U.S. military judge and United Nations legal professional, the appointment process through the Marshall Islands’ Judicial Service Commission and parliament, and her relocation to the islands. Justice Murnane describes the court’s general jurisdiction over criminal, civil, land, and customary law cases, highlighting the unique legal challenges in the Marshall Islands, including climate change impacts and the legacy of U.S. nuclear testing. She emphasizes the rewarding nature of the role despite lower compensation compared to U.S. judicial positions and encourages lawyers interested in public service and cross-cultural legal work to consider opportunities in the Marshall Islands judiciary.
