Abstract

This study examines teacher recruitment practices in public secondary schools in Tanzania and their impact on hiring high-quality educators. It finds that recruitment primarily relies on academic and professional certificates, with limited use of interviews, practical assessments, or activities such as career fairs and mock interviews, despite legal mandates. While advertising teaching vacancies has broadened candidate pools, the lack of comprehensive screening has led to the employment of teachers who often lack subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, and commitment, affecting educational quality. The study recommends that recruitment authorities adhere strictly to established criteria and incorporate more rigorous evaluation methods aligned with the person-environment fit framework to improve teacher quality and educational outcomes.
