Abstract
This article examines the paradox of the Republic of Cyprus’s (RoC) independent popular music production, which has generated a substantial and diverse body of work over the past two decades yet remains largely unrecognized within the country’s cultural public sphere. It identifies two parallel music realities in RoC: one shaped by Greek media and industry catering to consumers, and another developed by local creators whose output struggles for visibility due to historical, political, and infrastructural factors rooted in Cyprus’s postcolonial status, ethnic divisions, and small market size. The study draws on song cataloguing, surveys of 102 musicians, and interviews with practitioners to highlight how these dynamics, alongside challenges posed by digital platforms and AI-driven recommendation systems, hinder the development of a sustainable local music industry and popular music heritage. The article underscores ongoing efforts by musicians and institutions to increase recognition of Cypriot music and calls for contextualized support that acknowledges RoC’s unique historical and cultural circumstances.
