Abstract
Moldovan President Maia Sandu is facing protests and rising tensions as she seeks re-election this year. The protests in the Russia-friendly region of Gagauzia, along with previous demonstrations, have raised concerns that Moscow is increasing pressure to derail Moldova's pro-European path. The governor of Gagauzia, Evghenia Gutul, has received direct backing from Russia and has called for Moscow's protection, alleging that the Moldovan government is limiting her region's budget and breaching democratic rights. Sandu and her allies have warned of Russian attempts to destabilize Moldova and halt its pro-European trajectory. [Extracted from the article]
