Abstract

The US and its allies have launched airstrikes on Houthi rebel targets in Yemen in response to attacks that have disrupted commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The strikes targeted radar installations, storage and launch sites for drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. The goal of the airstrikes was to cripple the militant group's ability to attack commercial vessels. The US received non-operational support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands. The strikes mark a significant escalation in the conflict and come after Secretary of State Antony Blinken's trip to the Middle East to garner support for more aggressive action against the Houthis. The Houthis have vowed to continue their attacks until Israel ends its assault on Gaza. The airstrikes have caused heavy explosions in the Yemeni capital of Sana'a and the port city of Al Hudaydah. The impact on the Houthis' ability to launch future attacks is believed to be significant. The strikes have also raised concerns about the potential for further escalation and regional tensions.
