Abstract

The article discusses the public art initiatives of Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez in mid-1970s Caracas, focusing on his creation of ephemeral painted walkways designed to evoke joy among pedestrians and challenge the dominance of automobiles in urban spaces. Cruz-Diez's work reflects a broader transnational movement to integrate art into public life, while simultaneously revealing the complexities of mobility politics in Caracas, particularly the interplay between pedestrian experiences and the oil economy. The walkways serve as both a celebration of pedestrian freedom and a critique of the environmental impacts of automobility, highlighting the intricate relationship between art, urban space, and societal structures.
