Abstract

The article discusses escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia following Ethiopia's decision to skip an Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) meeting, which was convened to address a controversial port deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland. The January 1st Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allows Somaliland to lease a section of its coastline to Ethiopia for military and commercial purposes, in exchange for Ethiopia recognizing Somaliland's independence. Somalia has condemned the deal as an act of aggression, leading to a diplomatic fallout and protests in Mogadishu. The African Union and other international entities have called for respect for Somalia's sovereignty, while Ethiopia remains committed to implementing the agreement. The situation has implications for regional dynamics, particularly involving Eritrea and Djibouti, as well as reactions from Egypt. [Extracted from the article]
