Fatty acid profiles of oomycetes (Halophytophthora and Phytopythium spp.) from Philippines mangroves.

Abstract

This article focuses on the fatty acid profiles of mangrove-associated oomycetes, primarily Halophytophthora species and two Phytopythium species, isolated from various mangrove forests in the Philippines. The study identified key fatty acids produced by these isolates, including saturated fatty acids like palmitic acid (C16:0) and stearic acid (C18:0), as well as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as linoleic acid (C18:2n6c), gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, C18:3n6), and cis-11,14,17-eicosatrienoic acid (ETA, C20:3n3). Phytopythium isolates showed higher concentrations of GLA compared to Halophytophthora, and most isolates produced omega-3 PUFAs like ETA. The findings suggest that these mangrove oomycetes are promising, cost-effective sources of industrially valuable fatty acids with potential applications in aquaculture, biodiesel production, and human health.
