Abstract

The article focuses on the Ninth Edition (2024) of the Beyond Borders Kastellorizo International Documentary Festival, held on the remote Greek island of Kastellorizo. Organized by the Athens-based Hellenic History Foundation and directed by historian and filmmaker Irini Sarioglou, the festival emphasizes quality over quantity, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and supporting filmmakers at various career stages through screenings, masterclasses, and industry events. The 2024 program centered on themes of displacement and resilience, featuring films that highlight marginalized voices and included Australia as the country of honour, reflecting on Indigenous colonization. While the festival actively engages the local community through cultural and social initiatives, critiques have been raised regarding its political neutrality, particularly its omission of Palestinian filmmakers and partnerships with Israeli institutions amid ongoing conflicts, raising questions about the role of arts organizations in political activism.
