Abstract

This article considers three disparate but interrelated and complementary urban spaces in nineteenth-century Havana, Cuba: the plaza, the paseo, and the street. In so doing, I explore the notion of an urban palimpsest as a productive way we can reconsider relationships between the physical, mental, and social aspects of the colonial city. To this end, I examine the colonial development of signifying practices in Havana's urban spaces and how urban signification was inscribed, performed, lived, interpreted, erased, and "rewritten" through myriad forms by multiple actors and audiences. Rather than limiting my attention to only the most permanent forms of spatial annotation, such as architecture, statues, and other physical elements of the city, I consider the interrelationships between such forms and the social performance of the city. In this way, I use the idea of the palimpsest as spatial metaphor to approach Havana as a complex and ongoing process of inscription, erasure, and reinterpretation.
