Abstract

The article discusses the recovery of South American fur seals in the central South Atlantic Ocean following extensive harvesting for their oil and skin, which led to population declines. The South American fur seal population is recovering at different rates across the Southern Atlantic after the cessation of sealing, with a recent estimate of 393,500 individuals globally. A recent survey in Chubut province identified three colonies with a total of 20,570 individuals, indicating an increasing population trend with an average annual percentage change of 2.15%. The study highlights the importance of continued monitoring to understand the recovery process of South American fur seals in the region. [Extracted from the article]
