Abstract

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has denied Mexico's request for provisional measures to protect its embassy in Quito, Ecuador, stating that Ecuador has assured it will respect and safeguard Mexico's diplomatic premises. The case arose after Ecuador forcibly entered the Mexican embassy and removed a former vice-president seeking asylum. Mexico argued that Ecuador's actions violated international law, while Ecuador claimed it was justified due to the individual's criminal convictions. In a separate case, the UK has denied the extradition of a Brazilian citizen due to concerns about human rights, specifically the conditions in Brazilian prisons not meeting the standards of the European Convention on Human Rights.
