Abstract

This article focuses on the lived experiences of people with diabetes in Liberia, a low-income country in sub-Saharan Africa, using a critical hermeneutic study with photovoice methodology involving 10 participants from Monrovia. The study identified three main themes: strengths, highlighting participants' commitment to diabetes self-management despite socioeconomic challenges; challenges, including limited access to diabetes medications, supplies, education, and food insecurity; and solutions, emphasizing the need for a community-based diabetes centre to provide education, care, support, and access to diabetes-friendly foods. Participants advocated for increased prioritization of diabetes on Liberia's national health agenda and greater resource allocation to improve diabetes care. The findings underscore the importance of contextually relevant, community-driven interventions to address the complex social and economic barriers faced by people living with diabetes in Liberia.
