Abstract
This article critically examines the representation of LGBTQ+ rights in Guyana, highlighting how prevalent Western-produced maps, reports, and media portray the country through a colonial lens as "violent," "uncivilized," and "behind" in LGBTQ+ progress. Drawing on eight weeks of fieldwork and 36 interviews with Guyanese LGBTQ+ individuals and activists, the study reveals a more nuanced reality that includes both ongoing discrimination and significant positive social changes, community organizing, and evolving acceptance, especially among younger and certain ethnic groups. It emphasizes the importance of intersectional factors such as gender identity, class, ethnicity, religion, and location in shaping diverse LGBTQ+ experiences in Guyana. The article also discusses how local activists negotiate Western LGBTQ+ rights frameworks and priorities—such as decriminalization and marriage equality—while focusing on context-specific issues like anti-discrimination protections and socioeconomic challenges, thereby challenging linear Western progress narratives and advocating for representations centered on local voices and complexities.
